Siro's Ultimate AKS-74 Pack

Hopefully a successful attempt at a realistic AKS-74 skin

Siro's Ultimate AKS-74 Pack

Thanks to HeNe for his AK-74 texture, which I used the top cover and ejection port from with a few modifications.

Thanks to Darius6 for his wonderful sounds from Oblivion Lost Mod 2.0

Description:

A skin pack for the AKS-74 to make it look as modern and realistic as possible. This skin comes in three optional variations: you can choose to use the bakelite magazine or normal plastic magazine, or the plastic magazine with green plastic handguards like from the default skin. Bumpmaps are included along with new sounds by Darius6.

I do not have any problems with people modifying this skin or including it in a pack or mod as long as HeNe and I are given credit for making it in the first place and no money is made. Enjoy!

Installation: extract to your STALKER:SoC folder. Copy the first "gamedata" folder into your STALKER: SoC folder. Choose which AKS-74 skin you would like to use and copy over the "gamedata" folder you just inserted. If you have already a gamedata folder, backup what you don't want to overwrite!

Note: Please try the skin in game first. Do not rate solely based on the screens. Some textures can look better or worse in the actual game. Thank you. Extra screens are included in the actual file if you don't want to bother with trying the skin out ingame (in which case, shame on you! :P ).

Posted by ROTOSHOT What is your texture quality in the screens? Med, high? I could take some awesome screens with mah computer :)

My settings are at max, but for some reason the still don't look as good as some peoples' screens!

No idea why. Might be the resolution.

It's okay, I'll take my own screens.

I've also got a PC problem again, so I'll be gone until I fix it.

Can you please be a darling and assess my hard work? Please?! :)

These really have to be seen in game to judge. Screenshots never do justice in my opinion. The metal looks really good, worn but not too worn. The detail on the furniture also stands out really nicely. I'm using the bakelite mag version because I like the colors, plus it makes it stand out more from the abakan. I disagree with Timmy, I think that the overall appearance is very natural. Fantom Oblivion's and Millenia's AKs used to be my favorites but these ones (especially the all black and the bakelite) look the most natural in STALKER.

btw Siro, I posted an SVD and SVU retexture on here a while ago but I'm not really satisfied with the upper receiver detail. I really like the look of the metal on these AK skins. I know you're busy working on OL but if you have a chance, do you think you might be able to give my SVD a bit of a workover?

Posted by Timmy Out of fairness, I will test your skin later and get back to you about it.

Thank you very much, you can't imagine how much I appreciate that.

I'm sorry for fussing like this, it might be an issue of pride for me because I genuinally do try to release good-quality skins.

Yes, I know that I probably should have tested the skin out ingame before assessing but what you must realize is; I am a very, very lazy human being. Extremely lazy.

Though I did try to take into account that some of the skin's parts could have been the cause of jpeg compression of the screenshots by comparing the gun with other areas of the picture, even though that was probably ineffective.

Out of fairness, I will test your skin later and get back to you about it.

While I appreciate your critique and that you gave me some good advice, I still find it very strange that you did not even try out the skin in-game and yet gave it such a low rating.

My screens are as high quality as I could get them, but I don't have an uber PC. It might also be the lighting in the screens that makes you think they're not identical. I used the same metal parts for all of them. It could be that most of the problems you described are rectified on higher settings that I am unable to run on, or that you preferably need to try it ingame instead of judging based on screens.

Since my Windows had to be reinstalled, nothing seems to be running correctly on my PC anymore.

You also say that the skin is desaturated, yet covered in green and purple patches. I fail to notice them at all.

I respect that you are a critic, I just disagree with you. I worked on this skin for a long time, a very long time. And that you only judge by the screens annoys me a little, to be honest. :(

Well, still, no hard feelings. It's just a skin. :)

P.S. I've included even more skins in the actual file, so if you don't want to try it ingame, you could have at least looked at the extra screens which are taken in different lightings.

It is nice that you have added variants to some parts of the skin, but overall this skin is very mismatched in terms of clarity and sharpness.

The main part of the dust cover is quite blurry, whereas the rear of the dust cover seems over sharpened.

The skin also seems to be covered in green and purple patches from top to bottom. I am not sure if this was intended or if it was an effect of compression but it really messes up the flow of the skin. The dodges placed around the skin seem far too intense and make themselves the focal point of the skin, which is not very good considering the placement of them. Some of the dodges from what I can tell are intended to be scratches, but they are very thick and blurry, you should sharpen them quite a bit to make them have a scratch effect.

Another thing that bugs me is the lack of ambient color. The metal seems to be completely desaturated aside from the compression artifacts. This makes the skin look very out of place in most areas and takes away from the realism quite a bit.

The sounds are okay, but not a huge improvement from the default and are ultimately unnecessary.

Please don't take this review the wrong way because I do appreciate anyone who submits something from stalker as it is a great game and needs more skins in it's section, but some day we need to stay away from default reskins.
